CHAMPAIGN-URBANA CAMPUS COMMUNITY COALITION MEETING

September 4, 2007

Attendees: Dennis Cockrum, June Burch, Parkland College, Roger Claxon, Mental Health Center, Jennifer Jackson, C-U Public Health Dept., Mary Russell, U of I, Chris Bruns, The Pavilion, Lisa Snider, Anna Willy, Prairie Center

  1. Welcome/Introductions
  2. Review of May 7, 2007 Minutes
  3. Membership Review Attendance has been very low Ideas to increase attendance – who isn’t here from last year? What are areas of the community that we may need to recruit from – faith-based, community-based? What are activities that we will be focusing on?  Will the Symposium create more interest and increase membership? What are reasons that people may be interested in attending?
  4. Goals Support Scott Friedlein and his work with the City Council for alcohol-related policies Increase relationships with public schools, for support of Coalition, increase awareness of alcohol-related issues Create more awareness in community of issues, using more media-related promotions Recruit student involvement for their “voice” on the issues.  Dennis Cockrum is speaking with 3-5 students to serve on Coalition.
  5. Media Update June Burch and Kathy Jobin will write “Letter to the Editor” for the News Gazette Dennis and June will work with Jody Littleton (Parkland College) on publicity for Oct. 5 Symposium News release will be sent to all media regarding Oct. 5 Symposium
  6. 2006 Illinois Youth Survey Lisa Snider has tabulated results of 2006 Illinois Youth Survey, which includes alcohol, tobacco, other drug info. for 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th graders, including state/county-wide data A presentation of these results will be made in upcoming months
  7. Coalition Presentations Discussion took place regarding Coalition members being available to make presentations to various groups on the issues the Coalition is addressing.  This will create more awareness in the community and hopefully increase membership of Coalition. Groups to present to may include: PTA/PTOs, school personnel, city officials
  8. Upcoming Meetings – will be held the 1st Tuesday of every month, in Room L159 @ Parkland College, from 3:00-4:30pm
